Nutrition

Hello good people from here and abroad… Sweden, the States, France, Iceland, Spain, England and to the one subscriber in New Zealand… Hello!

Nutrition

Nutrition

Our testing period is still going strong, from freeze dried food to nutrition dietary supplements from various brands, since we’re bringing protein bars and carbs gainers with all different words that’s good for the body. Trying out how well it’s for you, the better nutritions in the products compared to another, but mostly the taste, ’cause I’m picky haha. I know, you must sit there at home and thinking “suck it up crazy swede!” but hey, we’re having this 60 days in a row so the taste is very important, and also with water as a mix instead of milk which taste far better for the shakes.. and since no milk and a lot of ice.. water it is! With the help from Gymgrossisten we’re trying their own brand “Star Nutrition” which is a bit more tastier than than the others, but if I’ll be harch, they’re all kinda the same… but if I must chose, the gainer and protein shake with the milk chocolate taste is the best, when it comes to the taste.. only tried it out for a few days, so I can’t really give an experts p.o.v on how well it’s for my body, but we were at the gym today and it went pretty well, increasing strength and stamina, perhaps not for the shake.. more ’cause we’re really feeling that we’re going forward with this and that less than half a year, we’ll be walking towards the pole.. and perhaps there was a hot girl at the gym haha.

When it comes to “Nothing is impossible”, the motto for this expedition, in all matters and scenarios, I wanna give my thoughts and love to a special friend of mine who defeated cancer recently and attended a triathlon!

Now, for the first weekend ever since we started this, we’re gonna have an off-expedition time for two days to just breathe and if I know Christian and my self accurate… that plan will go to the dumpster!

Cryodesiccation

Drytech freeze fried field meals

Drytech freeze fried field meals

So, we’re in our testing period of various freeze dried meals from different producers, since we’re bringing and only eating freeze dried food for 60 days, it’s good to somewhat enjoy it, though I think we’ll get bored on our meals after a few weeks, but hey, it keeps us alive. We’re looking for a + 5000kcal per day day meal, and the one thing that came to mind is what’s provided in the Swedish military also known as “GrönpÃ¥sar” or “Field meals” from Drytech, so today we ate Pasta Provence which Naturmagasinet so nicely provided for us to try out various kinds. It was as tasty as I remembered it from the military and Christian who never tried it before was surprised how good it was and scraped his plate clean. For those who doesn’t know what freeze dried food is, it’s a technique for preserving food for many years, also known as cryodesiccation. It works in a few easy steps, basically having a finished delicious meal, then freezing the food and then reducing the surrounding pressure and adding enough heat to allow the frozen water in the food to sublime directly from the solid phase to gas. Then when it’s time for our dinner on the south pole, we just ad watter, stir for a few minutes and tada, dinner’s ready! We’ll test some more but we’re very much into Drytech’s supply. One pack for all three meals with gainer and snacks for one day will weight approximately 1,1kg/2,2lbs and since we’re two thats 2,2kg food per day, and we’ll bring food for 65 days so the total food weight will be 143kg!  With a pack of freeze dried food which is about 1900kcal, we’ll drink a gainer/protein shake, eat chocolate, beef jerky and pure butter, all this.. three times per day, and we still plan to loose around 10kg/20lbs! Awesome!

Phone master Christian

The clock is a quarter to midnight and I’m soon out the door for my jogging round, then go to sleep. Busy day tomorrow, me and Christian are gonna make phone calls all day long, or at least Christian who has a much sweeter voice than me, haha.

Good night every one. / Ted

Sydsvenskan

Sydsvenskan article

Sydsvenskan article

The swedish newspaper “Sydsvenskan” wrote a nice article about us the other day.

We just came from the gym, pretty exhausted and are now working on some stuff for the expedition and PR. Got lot’s of fun things we want to show you guys, but we have to wait a few more days till it’s finished… gonna be awesome!

South pole, here we come!

Believe it!

15 05 2009

Hey all! Today it’s 170 days to go and +15,000 visitors since february!

The whole idea, slogan and motto for all of this expedition and adventure is that nothing is impossible, and we mean that from the bottom of our hearts! And since we kicked this of in early march we’ve noted between both my self and Christian and external from all of you guys, our friends and family that everyone is pepping, encouraging us, keep fighting on for us and it feels so great knowing all of you are behind us. And we’re stoked from all of you guys that used the payson link and sponsored us with money.. even you Tim who gave us 1€.. every penny counts, and we’re most grateful.. and all you that placed an order for the support T-shirt, 100 orders so far! And when it comes to that nothing is impossible, what seems impossible are multiple things. The fact that we’re no athletes, we were in pretty bad shape before we started our exercise and what I thought was impossible, knowing y body is that I’ve gained 16 pounds in muscles in 50 days! Crazy! Then it’s the planning, and I tell you this is not a walk in the park. I kinda thought it would be hard, with past experience in project planning for movie making, but this isn’t even close. With the highest respect for NASA, but this planning feels like I’m planning a Space shuttle operation more than walking to the South pole. The budget, the planning and investigation of all different equipment. What kind of mittens are the best? How’s neoprene working on the pole? What tent? Fjellpulken or Alcapulka? Backpack or just a harness? what kind of food are the best with right amount of carbs for the daily intake we need which is approx. 6000kcal per day do we need, and where do we dehydrate it? And on and on and on.. that’s the impossible, or almost ’cause we’re in fact doing this! We quit our jobs doing this! This planning and training is all we do, each and every single day, 12 hours a day! And here’s the possible thing.. we’re doing this, living it.. and we love it!

With that said, I’m leaving you guys for now, overlooking which length we need on our sleds. Approx. 210cm long for the optimal packing volume, by now. then some budgeting, then the Keynote presentation for the sponsors we’re meeting. And also, with noting the Nasa planning I like to extend my gratitude for the NASA administration and the seven brave astronauts on board the Atlantis, serving the Hubble telescope. You guys rock!

/ Ted.

Back with a smile

9 05 2009

Hey, it’s Christian again and I’m in a wonderful mood this fine day.

The rain is gone, the dark clouds has finally given way for some blue skies again, we’re in the middle of budget planning, my wrist has healed up just fine, I’m getting back on track with the workout, my dear Alicia got accepted to start studying in Lund this fall, summer is around the corner and Goo Goo Dolls in my speakers makes me feel 10 years younger. :D

Workout, pasta and protein shakes (read: football, bbq and beer) is on the table tonight, and even though Canada stole our dreams of a gold medal last night, I can’t feel bad. Things falling into place.

More about everything next time.
Have a good day, wherever you are.

Gear up

21 04 2009

So I’ve been reviewing all we need for equipment and logistic and a fairly budget is set. And damn we need to sell T-shirt haha! Come on people, keep ordering them!

In the search for good equipment and technology, my good friend Tim tipped me of about a sleeping back with the motivation; If you’re gonna sleep in a bag for 60 days you’ll get crazy, so here.. try this:

Selk'bag

Selk'bag

This is a Selk’bag. A sleepingbag-overall hybrid-something :P Won’t be able to withstand the temperatures we need but I always find it funny to check up inovative gears for our trip. It can be found at Coolstuff e-store if anyone would like to give it a try.

Now It’s time to give a certain “bit off fruit”-company a call and ask them if their laptop can deal with the cold.

Later! / Ted

Ready? Set… Drag!

19 04 2009

Saturday sat the date for some sled-testing to note what need to be changed and improved so me and Christian with the help of Malou went down to Ribersborg where all of our training will be practiced. Since we haven’t acquired the wights we need for a perfect pull (about 40kg on sand, increasing to 60kg till November) and Christian is healing his hand.. I placed him in the sled to write down what changes is needed and so. And he weights about 72kg, which is far more than I ever honna pull so I was afraid I wasn’t able to rub the sled at all. But it went well! Made some preliminary changes to the equipment:

  1. A lot more cushion on the harness, since my hipbones are bruised blue today haha (used a climbing harness, no cushion what so ever.)
  2. Use boots, since I had the beach in my shoes after a few steps. Increased weight on the feet equals greater strength and preparation for the heavy Alfa Morde Extrem boots on Antarctica.
  3. Have fliers ready to handle out since many were curious of why I’m pulling a grown man in a 15€ blue sled from Toys ‘R Us.

Christian handled good PR with a parent while I dragged his kids in the sled. Was a good try out and we got good feedback for improvements. Wanna see us in action and talk to us? Ribersborg, Malmö is the place. Look for two guys pulling blue sleds.

Might be in Sydsvenskan tomorrow… exciting! Almost a bit nervous. Tingling sensations you know. More updates and improvements on the website is on the way, also a better and easier sponsoring/support systems for money transferring and e-shop. Also, we passed 12,000 visitors! Once again, and it can never be said enough… thanks for all the support guys and gals. It’s really nice to see your encouragement both here, on the facebook group, when you write about us in your own blogs and all the orders we get from buying T-shirt and pins!

Easter Sunshine & Stitches

17 04 2009

Spring is finally here, and it’s here to stay it seems. Perfect conditions to take our workout to step two, having our sleds ready to be put to the test and everything.  A test we had to put on hold for a little while due to reasons I’ll give you in a moment. But as all good things it was worth waiting for, and sled training is finally on our schedule. Or well, on Ted’s at least, as is the rest of his workout.

Mine, on the other hand, has faced a few setbacks the last couple of weeks. It all started with a bad fever of 39.5-40 degrees ( 103-104 degrees fahrenheit ) that lasted for three days and left me weaker than I’ve been in a long long time. And after a week of antibiotics there I was, finally ready to pick up where I left my workout, when I got a call from dr Hovstadius saying it was time for my right wrist surgery. So six stitches later I’m to stay away from workout for another 16 days.

Well enough about that, Ted’s keeping it up and I’m stuck with desk duty, planning planning & planning. Not that I mind that but I sure as hell miss sweating my ass off at the gym. ;)

Now grab a blanket and chill in the park before it gets dark. Perhaps even call a friend.
Enjoy the sunshine, we are.
